Today, 1199SEIU endorsed advocate and organizer Tony Simone in his race to
succeed Dick Gottfried in State Assembly District 75. 1199SEIU is the largest union in New York
and the largest healthcare worker union in the nation representing over 200,000 nurses and
healthcare workers in New York City and more than 300,000 members in New York State.
Simone said, “It is my honor to announce that 1199SEIU has endorsed our campaign. My
grandfather was a Teamsters delegate and taught me the importance of collective action. I will
always stand alongside workers and look forward to partnering with 1199SEIU in the fight for
good jobs, economic justice, a healthy planet and quality healthcare for all.”
“1199SEIU is proud to endorse Tony Simone for the Assembly,” said Dell Smitherman,
1199SEIU Downstate Political Director. “Tony grew up understanding the struggles workers
face and the importance of organizing. He will be a champion for healthcare workers in Albany,
ensuring they have dignity in the workplace and the resources they need to keep our
communities healthy.”
Following his victory in the June primary to become the Democratic nominee for the 75th
district, 1199SEIU joins other unions in their support for Simone, including: UFT, NYSNA,
Doctors Council SEIU, 32BJ SEIU, ASFCME DC37, LIUNA, NYS Building Trades Council, NYC
